Meet the Chicago Team Behind Mainspring Garage Door Co. of Chicago
We’ve been fixing and installing garage doors across Chicago since 2016, and the work hasn’t changed much. The springs still carry the weight, the openers still quit at the worst moment, and the wind off Lake Michigan still finds every gap in a weather seal. What keeps us showing up is the crew we’ve built, neighborhood by neighborhood. These are the people who answer your call, show up when we say, and stand behind the work.
Our People
Dennis Kowalski, Owner
I started this company in 1984 because I figured I could treat people square and still make a living. Thirty-nine years later, I’m still answering the phone some nights, still walking job sites when a technician calls with something odd. I hold a CSLB-equivalent contractor certification and spent my first decade in the trade working on every brand that mattered: LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Clopay, Amarr, Wayne Dalton, Craftsman, Raynor. The name “Mainspring” came from a customer in Old Town who watched me swap a broken torsion spring and said, “That’s the whole thing right there, isn’t it? The spring does all the work.” I bought the sign the next week. These days I mostly handle the books and train the apprentices, but I keep my tools in the truck. You never know when the Lakeview brownstones are going to throw you a curveball.
Marcus T., Lead Technician
Marcus has been with us fourteen years, and he’s the one we send when a job’s gone sideways twice before we got the call. He’s certified in high-torsion spring systems and has a particular knack for the older Wayne Dalton TorqueMaster conversions that half the companies in Chicago won’t touch anymore. Grew up in Austin, lives in Oak Park now with two kids and a dog that sheds enough to clog any garage door track. His dry observation, after a 9 PM emergency call in January: “At least the spring waited until after the Bears game.” Customers ask for him by name. We don’t blame them.
Elena R., Senior Installer
Elena came to us from commercial construction in 2016, and she brought standards with her. She’s our lead on full door replacements, especially the insulated Clopay and Amarr models that Chicago winters demand. Her specialty is precision alignment on older homes, the kind in Lincoln Park or Wicker Park where the frame has settled for ninety years and nothing is square anymore. She keeps a level from her grandfather’s toolbox in her bag, even though she’s got laser tools now. “The laser tells you where it is,” she says. “The level tells you where it ought to be.” Off the clock, she restores vintage motorcycles in a garage she insulated herself.
James “Jimmy” K., Service Coordinator
Jimmy answers the phone. That’s his job, but it’s not the half of it. He’s the one who figures out whether you need a technician today or if we can talk you through a quick reset, the one who knows which trucks are where and who’s got the right springs for a 16-foot Amarr Stratford. He’s been with us eight years, started as an apprentice, discovered he was better with people than with torque wrenches, and never looked back. He lives in Bridgeport, knows the permit quirks for every ward, and can tell you which blocks in Englewood still have the old Raynor hardware from the seventies. His superpower is remembering voices. “You called us in 2019,” he’ll say, and he’s usually right.
Devon W., Apprentice
Devon’s in his second year with us, working through the K.E.Y.S. training program under Marcus and Elena. He’s already certified in opener installation and troubleshooting, and he’s the only apprentice we’ve had who asked to spend a week just learning how to balance a door properly before he touched a spring. Smart move. The springs are where people get hurt. He grew up in Chatham, takes the Red Line to the shop most mornings, and he’s got a running bet with Jimmy about whether he’ll see more broken cables in Rogers Park or bent tracks in South Shore this summer. So far he’s down twenty bucks. He’ll make it back.
One Standard, Every Job
We’re not a franchise, and we’re not a call center with subcontractors. Every technician on this page is W-2, background-checked, uniformed, and trained under the same K.E.Y.S. code we adopted in 2019: Krafted right, Every time, Your home first, Standing behind it. The 90-Day Done Right Promise applies whether Dennis signs the ticket or Devon does. If it’s not right, we come back. No paperwork, no arguing, in writing on every job. Our trucks carry springs, cables, and openers for every major brand, so most calls finish in one visit. The price is flat and stated upfront. That’s how we’ve worked since 2016, and that’s how we’ll keep working.
If you need garage door repair, installation, or emergency service in Chicago, you’ll talk to Jimmy or Dennis first. Then one of our technicians will show up when we say, in a marked truck, with the parts already on board. Call (833) 436-9720 anytime. A live person answers, 24/7.
